This workshop is normally done in-person over two days, but is being converted to an online format.
Using software-carpentry.org materials this workshop will introduce you to the Unix Shell, Version Control with Git, and Python. It will be hands-on and cover the fundamentals of Python, including data types, conditional statements, loops and functions, as well as program design, version control, data management, and task automation. Participants will be encouraged to help one another and to apply what they have learned to their own research problems. The goal is to teach the practical knowledge needed to start programming, debugging and using Python in everyday tasks.
The course is aimed at academic and industry research and innovation teams. You don’t need to have any previous knowledge of the tools that will be presented at the workshop. You do need to have a desktop/laptop with a Mac, Linux or Windows operating system (not a tablet, Chromebook, etc) on which you have administrative privileges, as you will need to pre-load specific software packages. It will also be useful to have a headset and extra monitor set up for a dual screen option.
This workshop will take place over two weeks, as follows:
